How does Family Group Decision Making work?


  1. FGDM is a process where the invited family members and support people come to the FGDM meeting to develop a plan for their family.


  1. FGDM provides a safe, neutral and supportive place for the family and support people to share their thoughts and ideas.


  1. FGDM participants work as a team to develop goals and plans to support the best interests of the family.


  1. FGDM issues may include placement decision making, parent-child visiting, aftercare, sobriety, education, housing employment, transportation, legal, financial, medical, spiritual, and basic life skills.


  1. FGDM is a neutral family focused process where family members and support people contribute to a discussion which leads to planning for the future. 

How is the Family Group Decision Making meeting organized?


Pre Conference - Coordinator discusses goals, purpose, invitation list (releases), location, date, time, and refreshments.  


All identified participants will be contacted regarding the process and sent invitations.

Pre Follow-Up Conference Coordinator will discuss how the FGDM Plan has been working and schedule the follow-up conference.

The FGDM meeting typically lasts three to four hours.  If a follow-up is requested, that meeting lasts about 2 hours.
